Lower your expectations

June 8, 2020

Maybe you should think about lowering your expectations when it comes to your health and fitness goals.

Now you may be thinking that this is strange for a personal trainer/coach to be saying, but hear me out.

All too often your average Joe or Jane (all inclusive here) will start a diet or new exercise regime with their sights set on rock hard abs, a peachy bum, and to be lean and strong. And that’s great! Good for you and I wish you the best of luck. But one thing they underestimate is the time that it will take them to get to that “goal or ideal” body type.

Most people are basing their goal body on the top 1%, the elite, of whom they are seeing on social media. Usually with their tops off, living a fantastically picture perfect life in the sun. This gives the illusion to the average Joe or Jane, that it is easy to achieve and then maintain that type of physique and if they follow said persons “8 week get shredded plan”, they too will end up looking like that.

However, the timeframe they expect to achieve this in is all out of whack. They end up getting to the end of the 8 weeks, looking slightly leaner and maybe improved fitness levels but haven’t hit that goal body they had their hearts set on. This leaves Joe/Jane feeling, disheartened, unmotivated and most probably will feel like a failure. They then precede to tell themselves a story of how they can never lose weight, they don’t have the right genetics, poor me, blah blah blah and then throw in the towel and order a dominos.

But that isn’t the case, Joe/Jane just haven’t been told that it takes a fairly long time to build that type of body. It takes discipline, consistency, habit building, and an understanding of the basic principles of building muscle and dropping fat. All done over months and years.

Sorry to break it to you guys, but you have to be in it for the long haul. There are no quick fixes for long lasting change.

So basically, what I’m trying to tell you is that if you accept from the beginning of whatever new health kick regime you are following, that it is going to take months, maybe years to achieve the body you want. All of a sudden just by giving yourself a longer time frame and lowering those expectations, you give yourself so much more of a chance to actually reach that dream body you have in mind. Take comfort in knowing that you’ve got time and it’s not a race, just aim for 1% better everyday and you will get to where you want to be. Plus no one else really cares how fast or slow you achieve something, so there’s no external pressure to be perfect either.

I’m a big believer in the saying “you can do anything you put your mind too”, but you’ve got to start being realistic with yourself with what you can actually achieve in the time frame you’re giving yourself and the amount of effort you are willing to put in.

Start giving yourself a chance to succeed.
